Color expert is 'confident'
about those in new book
First there were a series of best-selling art instruction books - Exploring Color, The Creative Artist and Creative Collage Techniques. Other windfalls that followed were -  Exploring Color Coloring Book, Exploring Color, Revised and The New Creative Artist: A Guide to Developing Your Creative Spirit.  Mixed within all of the above, Nita Leland, who is noted as an expert in color, is also the designer and manufacturer of the Nita Leland Color Scheme Selector
Of course, there is more - much more -  besides her soon-to-be release of new book in August, Confident Color: An Artist's Guide to Harmony, Contrast and Unity.  Leland has been published in The Artist's Magazine, Watercolor Magic, Watercolor, American Artist, and is a contributing writer for The Art-to-Art Palette.  In addition, Nita conducts workshops throughout the United States and Canada, has been a featured artist in video series and her own award-winning works are in many public and private collections.
The new book, to be published by North Light Books of Cincinnati, Ohio took Nita "about a year to write the book, and editing and production takes about another year. 'Confident Color' is going into its final design stage. The book has 160 pages, it will be a hardcover with stay-flat wire binding, which is great for studio and classroom use," says author Leland.
The book also has a wider audience, including painters, collage artists, fiber artists, interior and floral designers, and craftspeople.  When asked of Nita how she finds her contributors, she says "Gathering artwork for my books is serious business, but it’s also great fun. I’ve been teaching and taking workshops since 1970 and have been fortunate to work with many fine artists, whose work now appears in one or more of my books."
A few of Leland's “famous artists” include: Don Andrews, Stephen Quiller and Skip Lawrence who are known for their creative color. On the other hand, Leland says, "I’ve found many outstanding artists in my own city of Dayton, Ohio." Some are: Sharon Stolzenberger, Bing Davis, Paul Melia, and Br. Joseph Barrish, and in workshops she taught around the United States: Shirley Eley Nachtrieb, Herb Reed, David Daniels and Gwen Talbot Hodges, and in Canada: Donna Baspaly and Lynn Lawson Pajunen.
Occasionally a piece catches Leland's eye in a publication/Jonathan Talbot or exhibition/Terry Andrews, or she notices a particular style or color treatment/ Mike Bailey that will enhance her book. Nita also will search the internet for artists whose work she admires and  to see if they have created anything she can use/ Lawrence Goldsmith, and once in awhile she will come upon a surprise/Dwayne Daniel.
"In Confident Color I’ve incorporated the work of fifty artists in watercolor, oil, acrylic, casein, gouache, mixed media, pastel, collage, and fiber arts." The theories and principles of harmony, contrast and color schemes discussed in this book apply to all color arts. In addition, Leland said, "It’s my belief that if you love color, no matter whether it’s bright, bold, soft or earthy, you are a colorist." She presents these and many other approaches to color, with more than eighty “Try-it” activities, involving color studies and experiments for hands-on experience with color.
Those fifty contemporary artists from the United States and Canada who contributed and work selected to illustrate a wide variety of color principles are:
Alabama: Don Andrews, Fairhope; Karen Jacobs, Birmingham.
    Arizona: Janie Gildow, Green Valley.
California: Mike E. Bailey, Santa Cruz,  Angela M. Chang, Long Beach, Cathy Quiel, Santa Barbara.
   Colorado: Stephen Quiller, Creede.
Florida: Terry Andrews, Ocala, Robert Frank, Crestview.
Louisiana: Anne R. Eberle, Monroe, Gwen Talbot Hodges, Shreveport, Kathy Miller Stone, Baton Rouge.
Maryland: David Daniels, Silver Spring, Skip Lawrence,  Mount Airy.
Missouri: Shirley Eley Nachtrieb, St. Charles.
New Jersey: Michalyn Tarantino, West Windsor.
New Mexico: Julie Ford Oliver, Las Cruces

Rayman's 'Elevator'
in new Leland book
In 2004, when Pat Rayman officially retired from the Delphos, Ohio public school system, the Delphos Herald’s front page headline read: Rayman to brush up on her own artwork -  and that is what she has been doing - because this coming August, her "Delphos Elevator" will appear in Nita Leland's newest book, "Confident Color: An Artist's Guide to Harmony, Contrast and Unity."
"Delphos Elevator” is in theIntroduction on page 16 along with another work of art headed, “Color Play Your Way,” said author Nita Leland. “Her work was chosen because of her use of lively color rather than local color to represent her subject.”  Leland is a watercolorist from Dayton, Ohio, who is in demand throughout the United States and Canada, as an artist, color expert, teacher, lecturer, and juror. In addition to her new book being published by F+W publications of Cincinnati, Ohio, Leland also has a string of past works that has received worldwide acclaim.
Rayman is described as a professional artist who “manipulates realistic color to unify a picture through the use of sound color principles, rather than a what-you-see-is-what-you-paint method,” said Leland. Some of Rayman's other works that were under consideration were: "The Altro," and "A Light in the Forest."
Since my Delphos retirement, Rayman says, “I have remained very active in my own artwork and continued education.” In addition, she instructs art applications at not only the Wassenberg Art Center in Van Wert, Ohio, but also various area art centers and an academic art education course at Wright State University in Celina, Ohio and serves as the Art Director for The Art-to-Art Palette Journal.
A special book offer of $25.00, which all includes shipping and handling plus signed by Leland and Rayman  is available through Friday, August 31 by emailing art-to-art@bright.net. "All net proceeds from orders through me are used to help fund awards in the Art-to-Art Palette Journal's award programs," she said. A book signing at Books & Co. in Dayton, Ohio area is scheduled later this year with Leland and others.

Supporting the Arts and Educational communities
A Palette review . . .
When Peter Bruning came to the United States in 1949, he had already been exposed to more European art impressions than most people will know in their lifetime.  He grew up in Amsterdam, where art in the 1940s was a popular environment.  The city of Rembrandt provided fine museums, parents who encouraged the talent and a high school that literally bled art.
In Bruning’s newly released book -  “A TASTE of  the WORLD” -  a vast array of global climate provides the backdrop of optimism, sunny days and good friends.  Paintings range from Germany, Italy, Greece, France, Holland and Spain blending together with several of the United States.  The delicate selection has taken Bruning fifty years to create.
An intimate viewing of Bruning’s work can be found at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Bloomington where students are enriched by the uplifting scenes that spot the hallways.  The main classroom building, Moench Hall, holds a unique 7-by-6 foot painting created by Peter Bruning commemorating the 100th anniversary of modern physics, tastefully uniting art and science as one.
A colorful, uplifting catalog composed of acrylic and oil, plus a few surprises, is a delight for anyone who is searching for the natural beauty in our world.  Published by Author House in Bloomington, Indiana, first printing editions are available by phone  800-839-8640 or more information at:
